This is a great tool. I originally bought it to measure time outs for the kids. For example, a 7 minute time out would use the 4 minute and then the 3 minute timer, which the kids can be in charge of. We've also used it to time homework. Sometimes, the homework seems overwhelming, and all I have to do is say just try it for 5 minutes and put the timer in front of them. If my kids know they only have to try for 5 minutes, then it takes the pressure off. In most cases, the homework is completed within 5 minutes, or my kid is comfortable and feels like he can finish it without problem. The different colors make it attractive and for some reason it is soothing to just watch the sand fall.
