My GE fridge from the early 2000s started to have cooling issues. Food in the fridge was no longer "beer can cold" and the freezer froze up badly. Fridge was not defrosting automatically. After doing some research and testing the components with a multi-meter, I've found the defrost timer and thermostat to be the culprit. After replacing those two parts, the heater finally turns on when I manually advance the timer.
